The Novel Approach to Tutoring
Multi-sensory strategies
We offer students multi-sensory tools and strategies that help them process language using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile learning pathways, simultaneously. Students process learnings more effectively can retain concepts long-term.
Direct and explicit instruction
Orton-Gillingham has identified hundreds of patterns and consistencies in English, turning language into a math and science. We use direct and explicit instruction to teach these patterns and consistencies to our learners, and takes the guesswork out of learning how to read.
Child-centered learning
All our tutoring programs are tailored to each student’s specific learning needs. Our initial Orton-Gillingham based assessment identifies literacy gaps and leads to a customized learning plan that incorporates a student’s likes and interests as much as possible.
Basic to complex
After we know the foundational literacy gaps that the student is struggling with, our phonics tutors move from basic to complex material. We make sure that each learner is successful as they tackle new challenges so that they gain confidence in their ability to read and write.

Online tutoring sessions are available for students anywhere in Canada and the United States.
Following the Orton-Gillingham Approach, Novel tutors teach your child all the important mechanics of reading, writing and spelling.
A tutoring session is 30 minutes and takes a student through a structured basic to complex lesson plan. Students are introduced to the learning objectives and multi-sensory strategies are deployed to support effective processing and long-term retention of the concept. Our tutors build active learning components into each lesson and make sure to accommodate the different learning styles of our students.
